Cut+Dry is a fast-growing FoodTech startup revolutionising the $500B US food supply industry by directly connecting the people who produce and distribute food with those who purchase and prepare it in a commercial setting. Our platform provides wholesale suppliers, manufacturers, and their customers (restaurants, caterers, hotels, lodging, etc.) with an all-in-one order management, shopping, payment, and tracking solution that saves valuable time, allowing users to do more, and ultimately, build a more profitable business.
Who We Are Looking For
Our ideal candidate is a hands-on Technical Lead who owns the hardest problems in the platform - from backend architecture and database performance to AWS infrastructure, production, reliability, and application security. You will be expected to be in the code every day: refactoring legacy systems, migrating critical subsystems with zero downtime, profiling hot paths, and tightening the feedback loops for the rest of engineering. You move fast, operate with discipline in production environments, and bring juniors along through review and pairing rather than meetings and slides. This is a builder's role, not a managerial one. You should be happiest wheshipping.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Engineering Infrastructure
Own large, multi-quarter platform initiatives end-to-end — from design through rollout — including the migration of legacy subsystems to modern replacements with minimal customer impact.
Refactor core framework-level code and data-access layers to improve testability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
Drive language, runtime, and tooling upgrades across a large codebase, keeping the platform on a modern, well-supported foundation.
Own production and non-production cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS), including deployment pipelines, auto-scaling, logging, and environment isolation.
Improve deploy safety and developer velocity — zero-downtime releases, controlled rollouts, and robust local and cloud development environments.
Performance, Security & Reliability
Profile and optimise application and database performance — query patterns, indexing, caching, batch processing, and background job efficiency.
Identify and remediate application-level security issues across the stack, and raise the bar on secure coding practices within the team.
Lead production incident response: triage, root-cause analysis, hotfixes, and data recovery where needed.
Build in graceful degradation, retries, and operational safeguards so the platform stays resilient when dependencies misbehave.
Technical Leadership
Review PRs across the team with a high bar, particularly for platform-touching code.
Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through code review, pairing, and written design discussion.
Represent the platform team's constraints and priorities to product and other engineering teams; make clear technical calls and document the tradeoffs.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent technical field.
5–10 years of experience building and operating production-grade web applications.
Hands-on coder. You should be writing and shipping production code as a core part of your week, not just reviewing it.
Strong expertise in at least one server-side language (Python, PHP, Node.js, Go, or Java) with the depth to refactor framework-level code and reason about runtime behavior.
Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern front-end tooling (ESLint, Babel, webpack, Prettier).
Deep experience with relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL) including indexing, query planning, batch operations, read replicas, and migrations on large tables.
Working experience with Redis, queueing systems, and caching patterns.
Hands-on AWS experience: EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, CodeDeploy, CloudWatch, S3, IAM, and cost-aware instance sizing.
Solid understanding of web application security (OWASP top 10, authn/authz, session handling, CSRF, XSS).
Experience owning CI/CD pipelines (CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or equivalent) and build/deploy tooling.
Experience using Sentry, CloudWatch, or equivalent tools for production debugging and incident response.
Excellent written and verbal communication; able to lead technical discussions and articulate architectural decisions to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
